Home Buying Guide for Pet Owners
Are you a pet mom/dad here in Alaska? If so, we all know how precious it is for you to keep you fur babies’ needs in mind when getting a home.
I had a friend who had to send his fur baby for adoption just because the house they rented does not allow pets. That kind of scenario is heart breaking so we know decisions to purchasing a home too can be greatly influenced by them. They are family members so the desire to have a better space that you daydream about for them is a must.
Here are five things you need to consider to ensure you find the perfect home for the both of you.
Local pet laws and requirements
Check the local pet laws and pet owner restrictions. Familiarize yourself with breed-specific legislation within your state and city. Check if there are limits on the number of animals allowed in home. Some HOAs can also set ordinances with pets in communities for health and safety reasons. If you have a breed that tends to make noises of bark a lot, find out your HOA or city ordinances.
Pet Services Access
Check your neighborhood if there are emergency pet centers, veterinarian, pet stores, pet parks where you can safely walk your dog. Also, are there pet sitters, groomers and walkers in your area that you may need. A good Alaska realtor will definitely know what each neighborhood offer so you can let them help with this.
Neigborhood
Is your neighborhood pet-friendly? Can you ensure that yoyr pets are safe to roam around this neighborhood? Are there pet-friendly amenities around? Is the home located right on an area that may potentially be dangerous for your pets? Are there other pets nearby? It won't hurt to familiarize yourself with the neighborhood.
Home features
Will the home design and features be comfortable for your pet? Is there enough space? Is the flooring pet-friendly? Some recommends solid hardwood since it can be refinished when it's scratched. If the house is multi-level, can they handle the stairs? Is there anything in the house that may cause hazard to your pets like unsecure windows or ponds?
Fenced yard
This is important for pet owners. Is your yard pet-friendly? If your pet run free, can they play safe in there? Can they jump over it? Also, don't forget to check with the HOA if there are fencing restrictions.
Take your time and don't rush the hunt for the perfect pet-friendly house you've been dreaming for. Create a plan and don't hesitate to get some help.
