Tips to Prepare Your Yard for Winter


Winter is almost here! To make sure that you have a healthy lawn bursting with color when spring comes, now is the time to prepare and get your yard ready for winter!

Grass

First off, know that grass will continue to grow slowly while the weather turns chilly- it’ll grow until the ground freezes. Continue to mow it to keep it at a minimum height. This will reduce the fungus damage until it stops growing. Plus, it is nice on the eyes and will make raking easier too!

Perennial plants and weeds

Pull out perennial plants and weeds including its roots and all. Weeds take all the sunlight, water and nutrients to help them survive during the winter, which is not good on your plants.

Debris

As the season gets cooler, perennial plants die out and leaves will continually drop off of trees. Rake and mulch them. Don't let them come in contact with your lawn because it smothers it. This is the most time consuming task for every homeowner but it is worth it and your effort will be repaid when you see a lawn free of bare ground in spring time.

Fertilization and Aeration

You should fertilize your yard from time to time. I suggest getting some help because there are different fertilizer required in each time and season. It's like giving your yard food. It needs it. It is best to add lime or composted manure to give it time to break over the winter.
Aeration is done to penetrate the soil throughout your lawn by perforating small holes to allow air, water and nutrients in. This results in a stronger and more vigorous lawn. Consult a professional so they can check your soil to see if it’s ready for aeration.

Prepare for freezing

Lastly, but definitely the most important- don't forget to disconnect everything from your faucets as water expands when it freezes. Drain pipes, hoses and sprinklers- they must all be disconnected (winterization) to avoid splitting open in the winter and causing expensive damage. Also, mark everything essential like your water/gas meters so you'll know where they are when everything freezes

Following these simple tips are essential to protect your lawn all-year round. As the saying goes, prevention is always better than finding a cure down the road!
